What is the Corona Virus?
Corona Viruses are a large family of viruses that cause a range of illnesses, ranging from a common cold to more serious
ones such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome SARS. The corona virus that we are hearing about in the news, is what the scientific community is calling a Novel Corona Virus or COVID-19, meaning that it is a new strain that humans have previously
Corona Viruses are generally Zoonotic, which means that it can travel between animals and humans, however,
there are Corona Viruses that only affect animals.
The first case of Corona Virus or COVID-19 was identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. As of 29 February 2020,
more than 85,000 cases have been confirmed in 60 territories, of which 8,000 were classified as serious. At least 2,900
deaths have been attributed to the disease and more than 39,000 people have recovered. The risk of it spreading further is
Given the severity of the Virus and the pace of its spread around the globe, different people for political or racial reasons,
have tried to spread rumors and conspiracies about the Wuhan Corona Virus which are completely divorced from reality.
Here are the Six Myths regarding the Corona Virus or COVID-19
Myth 1 – It can spread through air
As per the World Health Organization(WHO), different studies to date suggest that the virus that causes COVID-19
is mainly transmitted through contact with respiratory droplets rather than through the air.
So the argument that the Novel Corona Virus or COVID-19 can spread through air is False.
- The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread
when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.
- These droplets land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching
these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
- People can also catch COVID-19 if they breathe in droplets from a person with COVID-19 who coughs out or
This is why it is important to stay more than 1 meter (3 feet) away from a person who is sick.
Myth 2 – Antibiotics can cure Corona Virus (COVID-19)
There is no treatment or medicine for the illness. Taking antibiotics will not help you since it is a virus and not
bacterial. There is no vaccine for the Novel Corona Virus. However, its medical treatment is quite similar to flu.
Patients are advised to rest and drink plenty of fluids to keep themselves hydrated.
Myth 3 – Garlic and Sesame oil can cure Corona Virus(COVID-19)
As per the World Health Organization, garlic “may have some antimicrobial properties,” but there’s no Scientific evidence
that suggests it can ward off the Corona Virus(COVID-19). Likewise, sesame oil (either applied topically or ingested) won’t
kill the virus either.
Myth 4 – Marijuana can cure Corona Virus(COVID-19)
You might have seen numerous posts on Facebook suggesting that “scientist are shocked to discover that weed kills
Corona Virus,”. Don’t believe it, and discard it as false.
There is proven evidence that marijuana contains antibacterial Cannabinoids that can eliminate bacteria. This is why
scientists suspect weed may one day help treat antibiotic-resistant diseases, but again, the Novel Corona Virus(COVID-19) is a viral disease and not a bacterial one. So, smoking pot is not going to help you much.
Myth 5 – Algae can cure the Corona Virus(COVID-19)
One “holistic” healer, Gabriel Cousens, reportedly has told his followers in a recent email that they should use red algae
to prevent and potentially treat the Corona Virus(COVID-19). However, keep in mind that the Virus first came to light in
December 2019, and scientist have presented no evidence that suggests Red Algae can cure the Corona Virus(COVID-19).
Myth 6 – It only affects Chinese People.
Perhaps the most obnoxious and racist conspiracy theory that is circulating over the social media is that the Virus only
affects people who are of Chinese descent.
COVID-19 originated from Wuhan, China, there is virtually no scientific evidence to suggest that it only
affects people belonging to a certain race. As of today The COVID-19 has affected over 60 countries and territories around the world. There are 85,473 cases around the world and 2,924 deaths reported. Suffice it to say,
the victim pool of the COVID-19 virus is quite diverse.
Viruses have a nature to make people and animals sick. Viruses don’t care if you are Rich or Poor, Black or White, Asian or
European. Unlike humans, viruses don’t discriminate.
